How to Get Started (You've Been Thinking About it for a While Now).
"But HOW?"
I get asked this question a lot, and it's a fair one.
HOW do you start strength training if you've never felt like you belong in the gym before?
HOW do you eat just a few bites of "bad" foods?
HOW do you wake up in the morning and not hate on your stomach?
HOW do you dance when you're a clumsy dancer, or write when you're an unclear writer, or love when you're an insecure lover?
There aren't always easy answers, and, "just start," while true, isn't very helpful in the swirling overwhelm.
Name your fears.
Begin there.
What is it, exactly, that intimidates you?
What is the looming tower in the distance to which you feel you're trudging?
To what fate have you resigned yourself?
Is it true?
Is it likely?
Could you handle it?
Unpacking our issues around cultivating the confidence and courage to show up in our bodies and in our lives looks different for everyone; we all face different obstacles, and what is difficult or scary to me may be a pipsqueak at the foot of the giant facing you.
But it begins with a question — with indulging that persistent voice deep inside of you wondering, "what would happen if I did?" What would happen if you DID try a new way of moving your body, or a new way of thinking about food, or a new way of approaching conflict?
Maybe nothing. Maybe you'd receive the same result you always have.
But, maybe, the floodgates would open.
Maybe freedom would rush in, unexpected but invited all the same, dancing around you as your hair flies through the breeze and your head tilts back in laughter.
Maybe you'd finally realize: whatever is to come, you are a warrior, and you can handle it.
